What is Prediabetes?

When blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high enough to be diabetes

  • At high risk for Type 2 Diabetes
  • Heart problems

Are you at risk?

Risk Factors

  • A family history of type 2 diabetes
  • Being overweight
  • Being over age 45
  • Having high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Having had gestational diabetes
  • Not being physically active
  • Hispanic or Latino
  • Smoking

Family History of Type 2 Diabetes

  • One parent with type 2 diabetes (diagnosed before the age of 50) -- 14% chance of type 2 diabetes.
  • Both parents with type 2 diabetes - 45% chance of developing diabetes

Being overweight

Is the leading risk factor for T2 diabetes

High Blood Pressure

Signs and Symptoms

  • Tired
  • Thirsty, dry mouth
  • Urinate more
  • Blurry vision

Blood tests

  • Fasting glucose 100-125
  • A1c 5.7-6.4%

What can you do?

  • Lose weight
  • Be more active
  • Eat more healthy and drink more water
  • Eat breakfast every day
  • Sleep at least 6 hours a night
  • Quit smoking
  • Choose smaller portions
