• Chief of the Oglala Lakota Tribe
• Born in 1822 in North Platte, Nebraska
• Wanted to be a great warrior, and fought bravely in battles against other tribes, especially the Pawnees.

LIFE CONTINUED

• Orchestrated the most successful war against the USA ever fought by an Indian Nation
• Because of Red Cloud's War, the Fort Laramie Treaty was signed
• Died at 88 in the Pine Ride Indian Reservation

WHITE SETTLEMENT

• Resisted White settlement on the Bozeman Trail.
• led the opposition against the development of a road through Wyoming and Montana for two years, a period that came to be known as Red Cloud's War.
• Later in his life traveled to D.C. to promote Indian's rights

GOV. TREATMENT

• Red Cloud refused to sign many treaties, and walked out of many negotiations involving the USA
• The Gov. slaughtered many of his troops, but later he impressed them by his diplomatic skills
