Psalm 119:105-112

[Nun] 7. The power of the word for guidance (119:105–112). The psalmist sees God’s word as a light to guide him safely amid the dangers which beset his path through the darkness of this world. Under oath he professes his determination to always observe that word. His resolute observance of the law, however, has exposed him to persecution; therefore he prays God to preserve his life according to his promise. He calls upon God to accept the sacrifice of prayer and praise, and his voluntary vows of devotion to the law. He claims that his soul is in his hand, i.e., his life is in danger. Yet he does not stray from the path of obedience. In the law he has an eternal inheritance which no one can take from him. Therefore, his heart is inclined to perform those statutes until the end of life.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it,
that I will follow your righteous laws.

111 Your statutes are my heritage forever;
they are the joy of my heart.
112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees
to the very end.[d]

I have suffered much;
preserve my life, Lord, according to your word.
Accept, Lord, the willing praise of my mouth,
and teach me your laws.

Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law. The wicked have set a snare for me,
but I have not strayed from your precepts.

Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. My heart is set on keeping your decrees
to the very end.

Turn on the Lamp

big light, little light vs. 105
105-112. The Light of Life. Thy word is a lamp ... a light. His pilgrimage through life is under the guidance of God’s teachings. He thus vows to follow the light wherever it may lead and whatever dangers may be involved.

Pfeiffer, C. F. (1962). The Wycliffe Bible Commentary: Old Testament (Ps 119:105). Chicago: Moody Press.

lamp unto my feet - little lamp, next step, what happens today

light unto my path - the big picture - where am I headed with my life?

Commit

to the LORD's pathway vs. 106
Steadfastly purposed to follow the Lord's path, which he lights for me as I practice His Word

Taken an oath - made a commitment, put it in writing

confirmed it - reviewed my commitment to make sure it was the right one

which was to follow your righteous laws

- follow - insure that my behavior matches my beliefs

- aligning actions with behavior

If you don't believe it then why are you committing your life to it?

And if you do believe it, why is there such a disconnect between what you believe and what you actually practice?

Refresh

your life vs. 107
the symbol for refreshing the web page that you are on

There are times when following God's Word will cause you suffering.....

trouble

humiliation

attack

work through what is bringing you down

ignoring what's draining you does not address it.....for example

fatigue

discouragement

depression

all addressed in Scripture

Scripture is like the absorbing material that picks up a spill.....sprinkle it on the problem and watch the light of God's Word help you take it away

.....according to your Word

Willingly Praise

the LORD vs. 108
Accept - view as right and proper, see favorably

my willingness to give

cheerful - happy to do it
willful - because you want to out of your ability, called free will offerings, not for sin or atonement for some sin, penalty for some infraction
helpful - for a need

praise - verbal affirmation of God's character and ability

an activity usually done in public and so others can hear

TEACH me.....something you are willing to do after you praise the Lord first

help me develop my knowledge and

improve my skill set in obeying/practicing what I learn

"TRUST GOD"

with your life vs. 109
phrase used to describe he is in constant danger

Psalm 4:8
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety.

Matthew 10:28

28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 16:21 21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

Mark 10:33 “We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,

Luke 9:51....

As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

This preoccupation with living or dying can be a bit of a distraction...

act like you don't remember

have no more memory of something and as a result cease to care about it....

Rabbit Trails

avoid them vs. 110
Those who do not share your conviction about serving God deliberately set traps for you

sit by and hope you get caught

create distractions that lead us to wander of God's best path

they are warm and fuzzy, attractive in different ways, but all have one goal - to distract me from serving God

do not wander off aimlessly

stay aware of your surroundings

be aware of the traps - they are there

stay close to the details God gives you for your personal journey, tailored to your strengths and situation
