What is Sonar Used for?

• Measures the Depth of the Sea Floor
• Used to find sunken ships and aircraft
• Depth measurements are used to create rainbow colored maps detailing the seafloor

Pros

• Low cost
• Effectively provide distance of objects under the surface
• Produces a large amount of data

Cons

• Poorer discriminatory ability than vision
• Susceptible to distortion
• Can produce errors
• SEVERELY disrupts the ecolocation of marine mammals

Is it Beneficial to society?

• Yes, as long as it is used sparingly and in areas with little to no marine life
