MEN'S FANCY DANCE

PRESENTATION AND RESEARCH DONE BY DANIEL, RESEARCH DONE BY JULIA.

ORIGIN

DEVELOPED BY TWO PONCA BOYS IN OKLHOMA. IN THE 1930S DANCES WERE BANNNED. SO, INDIGENOUS PEOPLE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF A LOOPHOLE. THE LOOPHOLE WAS THAT THIS LAW DID NOT INCLUDE NEW DANCES. SO THEY MADE THE FANCY DANCE.

FACTS

  • It is very colourful and energetic. The outfit consists but is not limited to long-johns with bells.

FACTS.

  • Has many bustles. Some have feathers, some don't, and so on. They have. the brightly coloured fabrics called regalia.beaded headband is also a part.
  • The dance is controlled by a drum.

ANALYSIS

  • In body, there is a lot of movement, flailing if you wish, of the arms, and the legs flying around a lot. They make the, selves appear large and intimidating, the clothes contributing to that
  • In action, it's lots of hopping and spinning, jumping around. They also spin this little ball thing
  • It is quite contained, as they move a very minimal amount from their initial spot.
  • For time, it is quite high paced, the rythym is consistent, and movements depend on it, not doing any large movement between beats. Every movement is done at the same time, not on your own pattern.
  • In terms of energy, each movement is sporadic, but it isn't sudden, it's flowed right into. As well, there's lots of energy in each movement, no lack of strength in what they do.

This was done by the Ponca originally, the males specifically. They performed it originally in an arena in white eagle Oklahoma.
