Who Is Wade Davis?

Who Is Wade Davis:
* An ethnobotanist & anthropologist who travels around the world
* Degrees: Anthropology, Ph.D. in ethnobotany, & biology (all from Harvard University)
* Anthropology - social science studies origins & social relationships of human beings
* Ethnography - the scientific customs of individual people & culture
* Displays passionate concern over rate which cultures and languages are disappearing -- 50 percent of the world's 7,000 languages are no longer taught to children.

Davis At His Work

Visiting All Around The World 
* Gone worldwide as ethnobotanist (went to 15 cultural groups: the Americas, Asia, Africa, & the Arctic)
* Work has taken him to visit East Africa, Borneo, Nepal, Peru, Polynesia, Tibet, Mali, Benin, Togo, New Guinea, Australia, Colombia, Vanuatu, Mongolia, the high Arctic of Nunuvut, and Greenland.
* Spent over three years in Amazon & Andes as Plant explorer -> lived among 15 indigenous groups in 8 Latin American Nations. -> made 6000 botanical collections

Davis is a successful ethnobotanist & anthropologist, but he also became a success in writing! 
* Wrote stories & journals about variety of people & culture
* Has published 15 books about culture around the world ( nonfiction, shared journals & letters founded, photographs of things around the world, etc.)
* Books influence readers to preserve culture diversity
* Writes about the things he learned in his adventures
* Gathers information by visiting the place and finding which was indigenous to where
* Books: Borneo Rainforest (1990), Shadows in The Sun (1993), Nomads of the Dawn (1995), One River (1996) -> Nominated for 1997 Governor General’s Literary Award For Nonfiction, and many others
