giving into someones demands in order to keep peace
Blitzkrieg: German term for "lightning war" very fast and consistent tactic
Embargo: July 26th the us froze all japanese assets. cutting off oil and steel supply.
2nd great migration: the mass movement of about five million southern blacks to the north and west
Four freedoms speech: a speech given by fdr. he proposed four fundamental freedoms that people "everywhere in the world" should be able to enjoy
Hemisphere defense zone: western half of atlantic ocean was part of western hemisphere an would remain nutral
pearl harbor: Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor took place on December 7th 1941,
Rationing: Using less so the soldiers fighting could have more supplies.
Victory gardens: People kept their own gardens so more food that was produced in factories could go to the soldiers.
double v campaign: Blacks were fighting a war on two fronts. The war against racism, and the war across the sea.
zoot suit riot: a series of racial attacks in 1943 during World War II that broke out in Los Angeles, California
Bracero program: mexicans were used to work american fields while us men were off at war.
doolittle raid: Air raid on Tokyo Japan and other places on the Honshu island.
island hopping: a strategy used by Douglas MacArthur during WWii. allied forces would "hop" across small islands in the pacific to get closer to Japan.
Operation Torch: the British-American invasion of French North Africa
Operation Overlord: codename for the battle of normandy. also known as d-day.
Manhattan project: research to create the atomic bomb.
V-e day: this day (May 8th 1945) marks the surrender of nazi germany.
v-j day: August 15th 1945: marks the surrender of the Japanese.
Franklin d. Roosevelt: president during wwii.
Adolf hitler: Leader of the Nazi party in germany.
Joseph stalin: leader of the soviet union.
Douglas MacArthur: American five-star general and Field Marshal.
Winston Churchill: British prim minister during wwii.
george Patton: senior officer of the United States Army.
Dwight Eisenhower: commanded the D-Day invasion while serving as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe.
Harry S. Truman: President during the final months of wwii. ordered the drop of two atomic bombs on japan, ending the war.
Rosie the Riveter: A propaganda figure inpiring women to work in the factories.
Tuskegee Airmen: African-American military pilots who fought in Wwii.
Navajo Code Talkers: bilingual Navajo speakers specially recruited during World War II by the Marines.
442nd regimental: fighting unit composed almost entirely of American soldiers of Japanese ancestry who fought in WwII. most decorated unit in military history.
Neutrality Acts 1939: the us did not want to be involved in European affairs.
Lend Lease Act: the us would help supply the allies with the things they needed.
Executive Order 9066: order that sent all Japanese Americans into internment camps.
Korematsu vs United States: Court case concerning the constitutionality of Executive Order 9066.
