Chapters 1-3

Are the relationships that we have hindering our academic performance?

Are the relationships that we have hindering our academic performance? Honesty, I know that my parents do not really care what I do with my education; as long as I’m happy and have a good future ahead, they’re happy. It is because I want to have this experience and go to a great college that I’m even at Whittier Christian. My parents are so proud; with their love, support, help, and knowledge I always work to keep achieving an education.

“Greater parent involvement in and satisfaction with children’s schooling and higher expectations for children’s educational attainment,”(Teacher Scholastic 12). The more involved parents and family members become, the more educational expectations are made. Education can whatever you make of it. If your parents pressure you, you will most likely be in better classes with better grades. But, you probably will not be happy, or healthy even. If your parents do not really care or help you in any way, your schooling will most likely crumble. Everyone is different though, but it is said the more support and learning in the younger stages greatly improves children’s lives in and outside of school.

“IF YOU’LL CONCEDE THE NECESSITY OF GOING TO SCHOOL, WE’LL GO ON READING EVERY NIGHT JUST AS WE ALWAYS HAVE.” - ATTICUS FINCH

“Miss Caroline told me to tell my father not to teach me any more, it would interfere with my reading,”(Lee 19). Atticus, attempting to be the best father he can, reads with Scout all the time. But when she arrives at school and is told she’s go it all wrong, she becomes heartbroken that she is not allowed to share that time with her father anymore.

“Parents were empowered to take on more purposeful roles in supporting their children’s literacy development by directly engaging their children in activities such as expanding their oral literacy development, reading to them, and teaching them new letters and words,”(Teacher Scholastic 5). When learning to talk, read, and write, teachers have always asked for as much help and support they can from our parents. Why, because they influence our every thought and move. With just listening as a baby, you pick up on different sounds, words, expressions; it is how we learn. So if we are encouraged daily to teach children as much as we can and give them as much support as they need, why did Miss. Caroline push away Atticus’ teachings and Scout’s remarkable knowledge?
