HOW DOES THIS AFFECT PEOPLE?
What effect has this had?
Thanks to bias education and reporting, people gained prejudice to those on the other sides of the walls. They have given their children this prejudice and as a result, NI is still a troubled state. People have lost family, friends and even limbs. All of this, because of sectarianism.
Today, sectarianism continues to have an effect. Parades have turned violent, riots continue to happen and there are still bombs and murders.
The Peace Walls
Many 60ft walls were set up between Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods to prevent violence. Gates in the walls are locked at night and guarded. They have proved partially successful in preventing violent outbursts.
The Good Friday Agreement
On Good Friday, the leaders of the Para-Militaries came together to make peace. This has cut down sectarianism but it still remains strong in our society.
