MALARIA

Plasmodium

  • Plasmodium is a genus of parasites with over 200 known species, some of which are known to cause malaria.
  • Approximately 10 Plasmodium species can cause disease in human beings.
  • They are the most studied parasites in the world because of the infection they cause worldwide.
  • They are very small to where it can get into your bloodstream from parasites.

DISEASE BASICS

  • Malaria is spread by female mosquitos trying to get blood from hosts to produce their eggs.
  • Symptoms are chills, sweats, vomiting, Fatigue, and headaches.
  • Malaria is shown mostly effecting the poor countries such as Africa and South America.
  • The disease Malaria became known as early as 2700 BC by the Chinese.
  • Since then, we have learned new ways to protect ourselves from this disease.

Immune Defense

  • Malaria is untreatable, once you have the disease you can't do anything about it.
  • Non specific immunties that you can protect you from this is your skin barrier, chemical barrier, Interferon, etc.
  • 5 types of Leukocytes: Neutrophils- First Responders, Eosinophils- Destroy RNA, Basophils- Release Histamine.
  • Lymphocytes- Produce Antibodies, and Monocytes- Removes infections with no harm.
  • Medications they can give you to help fight it are Chloroquine, Quinine sulfate, and Hydroxychloroquine.
