PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SUPERCONDUCOTRS

THE SCIENCE BEHIND LEVITATING

HOW IT WORKS

  • When cooled beneath 167°C which is usually through liquid helium, the magnet field lines bend around the superconductor and it is pushed up to a level above the magnet.

Untitled Slide

  • Maglev train
  • Coil gun
  • Digital circuits
  • Motors and generators
  • Mobile phone base stations
  • Low loss power cable
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance
  • Mri scan

Maglev train
The maglev train uses superconductors to go fast and safely.

FACTS

  • It was first discovered in 1911 by Dutch physicist Heike Kamerlingh Onnes
  • Superconductors mean little resistance
  • Superconductors can now work at -138°C

CONCEPT
The concept is if you cool a superconductor below -165°C then the magnet field lines become distorted and the push the magnet up

LOW HEAT
Low heat is superconductors is the liquid nitrogen was founded in NZ by SCOTT. This means you no longer need to use expensive liquid helium.

HOW THIS IMPACTS SOCIETY
This impacts society immensely because there is no resistance so it can be safer and faster, our roads could be superconductors.
