Closest Known Relatives

  • Other river dolphins
  • Examples: Baiji, La Plata Dolphin, Squalodelphinidae, South Asian River Dolphin

Anatomical Stucture & Unique Features

  • They have a melon used for biosonar.
  • The dorsal fin is short in height but longer than the average dolphin.
  • It's the largest river dolphin.
  • Cervical vertebrae not fused unlike traditional dolphins
  • Length of fins allows them to perform circular movement for great agility to swim in their habitats

HABITAT

  • Found in South American countries
  • In dry season, dwell in river beds
  • In rainy season, disperse to flooded areas-- forests and plains

DIET

  • Up to 53 different species of fish
  • Examples: catfish, piranhas, river turtles :( , and fresh water crabs

Human Impacts

  • They have to compete with humans for for fish species
  • Often unintentionally caught in human fish nets
  • Used at bait for whaling
  • Pollution and gradual destruction of the Amazon Rainforst add to the vulnerability endangerment of the species
