He started getting into fashion when he found a tie. And wanted to design them. His boss said "the world isn't ready for Ralph Lauren." When he was 16. He got a drawer in the Empire State Building. Then he came up with the name polo. He chose polo because, he liked sports and said it represented an international sport and was a little more safisticated.

Ralph Lauren took inspiration from the yearbooks of Princeton, Harvard and Yale, and from old photographs of prominent Americans, as well as his own personal idea of the images that represent the classic American heritage and the “sporting gentleman.” He went on to develop the largest lifestyle company in the world.

Polo expanded rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s, opening boutiques across the United States and abroad. In 1984, Lauren opened the flagship store in New York’s Rhinelander Mansion.

The success of Polo has earned Lauren a personal fortune estimated at $6.5 billion. This figure, if accurate, would make Lauren the 122nd richest person in the world.
