OTTOMAN, SAFAVID, MOGHUL EMPIRES

KEY EVENTS

OTTOMAN EMPIRE

  • Byzantine empire ends in 1453.
  • Ottoman culture spreads.
  • Sultan Selim I takes control of Mesopotamia.
  • Ottomans try to conquer Venice but fail.

SAFAVIDS EMPIRE

  • Safavids made a truce with the ottomans.
  • Empire begins to decline in 1666.
  • Empire got invaded by afghans and taken control of.
  • Empire collapsed in 1723.

MOGHUL EMPIRE

  • On the death of Akbar, his son succeeds to the Mughal throne
  • For the final years of his life Shah Jahan is held a prisoner, by his son.
  • The death of Aurangzeb introduces the long period of decline of the Mughal empire.
  • The Persian ruler enters Delhi and removes much of the treasure of the Mughal empire

MAJOR RULERS

OTTOMAN EMPIRE

  • The sultan was head of the ottoman system.
  • Mehmed II moved the ottomans to the end if the Byzantine.
  • From 1514 to 1517, sultan Selim I ruled.

SAFAVIDS EMPIRE

  • Founded by shāh Esmā'īl
  • A shāh controlled the power of the aristocracy
  • Shāh 'Abbās hired foreigners for positions in the government

MOGHULS EMPIRE

  • Bābur was founder if the moghul empire.
  • Akbar took power after bābur
  • Akbar was bābur's grandson

ART/ARCHITECTURE/SOCIETY/CULTURE

OTTOMAN EMPIRE

  • Mimar Sinan, between 1569 and 1575 built the Selimiye Mosque
  • Considered to be the most important architecture piece in Islam
  • Miniature paintings of scriptures were common
  • The Ottomans also made decorative arts including carpet weaving, jewelry making

SAFAVID EMPIRE

  • Mural painting for palaces
  • An important painter was Muhammad Zaman
  • Painted many paintings of princesses

MOGHUL EMPIRE

  • Did a lot of paintings during this time.
  • But most importantly the architecture flourished
  • Built the Agra fort
  • Worked on marble art for castles
