DAILY LIFE IN THE CAMPS

DESTINY PAXTON'S RESEARCH

CONCENTRATION CAMP

TRANSPORTATION INTO THE CAMPS

  • Jews were lulled into false security(told they were going to work camps with better conditions). The key element were the railways, they made mass transports possible. Avg. transportation lasted 4 days . No water, food, toilet, and ventilation (How could they have thought this was better condition?). Some boxcars had 150 in them .

Taken into the Camps were real and perceived political opponents of the Nazi party mostly Jews. They used prisoners to provide forced labor or to await mass extinction.y

DAILY ROUTINE

  • Early wake up @4am , put shoes on , and then make bed
  • Time for washing - reach the sanitary facility
  • Must have mess tin on you (or you get no food)
  • Roll call , and then run to your work team
  • 12-24 hours of work
  • Lunch break , and then back to work
  • Finished work, and then evening roll call
  • Dinner, and then return to your barrack

FOOD GIVEN TO EAT

  • After morning roll call the prisoners would be given their morning"meal" - imitation coffee or herbal 'tea'. For lunch they were given a liter of watery soup, if lucky they might find a piece of turnip or potato peel. In the evening they were given a piece of black bread that weighs 300 grams with a tiny piece of sausage, or margarine, marmalade, or cheese.

SEPERATION

  • Genders were separated, but there were fragments of families that remained intact, such as siblings and cousins who tried to maintain contact. Where this was proved impossible, inmates created alternative families.

What I learned from this research project is that prisoners were living in very harsh conditions. They barely ate which came down to no energy for the work they were forced to do. They slept with rats and fleas leading to critical diseases. The security guards in the camps were rude and violent showing no remorse for the simplest of things. The Holocaust was not a happy time people were punished for their beliefs and it wasn't right . It's very important that we don't let this ever happen again.
