BY MICHAEL WATASE
My novel is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

The research source I found, titled "Consequences of Racial Stereotyping" by Wornie Reed, explains the repercussions of racial stereotypes and also shows how racial stereotypes are spread. This relates to the book due to its theme of racism, and because Reed helps uncover today's hidden racism, as opposed to To Kill a Mockingbird's overt display of racism.u

Wornie Reed explains that, "if an ethnic group... is seen as producing mainly athletes and criminals... the group may not be regarded as a significant contributor to society." This restricts the opportunities for that group, makes society view them negatively, and also gives the impression that they are not significant members of society.

In producing negative stereotypes through movies, media strengthens social prejudices. Even movies that seem like positive messages, such as Glory, there are also racial stereotypes implied. In Glory a black officer puts together a unit of black infantrymen. This movie contains a seemingly positive reinforcement of blacks, due to the main character being a smart, well spoken, and strong leader, but it also depicts every other black character as unmotivated, dumb, and un-loyal. Also, the main commander is a white man who is victimized for accepting blacks as if they were taken in out of pity.

Reed makes a strong and valid point about the ways minorities are viewed in society. First, the media makes some kind of stereotype or enforces a preexisting one, then the group is bound to that stereotype, which creates deeper prejudices. This cycle repeats itself until that stereotype has cemented itself in society.

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF RACIAL STEREOTYPING

My essential question is "what are the consequences of racial stereotyping?"
