ANTIETAM

  • A soldier found a copy of Lee's special orders that a southern soldier had dropped
  • McClellan had a plan to attack from the left & right flanks
  • They moved too slow, so Lee was able to shift troops
  • Union ended up losing

SO WHY IS IT SIGNIFICANT?

  • It caused lee to retreat without achieving what he was there for, so the north could claim some form of victory
  • 5 days later Lincoln issued a proclamation saying that if the confederate states didn't return to the union by January 1, 1863, all slaves would be free

GETTYSBURG

  • Lee wanted to invade a Northern city
  • Lincoln found o about the invasion so he sent he army to cut them off
  • Lee ended up retreating with 57,000 dead, wounded, or missing Americans with 1/3 of those being his soldiers

SIGNIFICANCE

  • Was the greatest battle of the civil war
  • Lee never tries to invade the North again
  • Confederates don't have enough strength to mount another offensive attack
