SIGNALMENT

9 YEAR OLD CASTRATED MALE GERMAN SHEPHERD "AXEL"

HISTORY

  • 5 episodes of weakness in past 4 months
  • Bulging belly
  • Uneplained weight loss
  • Pale MMS and random coughing
  • Panting and lethargy

PE FINDINGS

  • Pale MMS
  • Slightly distended abdomen

LAB FINDINGS

  • Anemic
  • Reticulocytosis
  • Left shift
  • Monocytosis
  • Lymphocytopenia

LAB FINDINGS CONT'D

  • Eosinopenia
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Hempathology: increased Howell-Jolly bodies
  • Neutrophilia

DIAGNOSIS

  • Large dog and older
  • History (regenerative anemia)
  • Erythrocyte morphology
  • These all suggest Hemangiosarcoma

DIAGNOSIS CONT'D

  • Fine needle aspiration cytology that shows cancer
  • CT Scan and xrays show extent

TREATMENT

  • Surgery
  • Further treatment after surgery
  • Such as chemotherapy to prevent spread

OUTCOME

  • Axel had surgery
  • sarcoma was removed
  • Following up with chemotherapy
