TRAVELS OF IBN BATTUTA

IBN BATTUTA

  • 1325-
  • I left my home of Morocco to go on the Hajj
  • As I am in the Muslim culture, this was natural
  • However, my journey went beyond Mecca
  • I traveled by caravan, but I was mostly alone

IBN BATTUTA

  • 1326- I arrive in Mecca and complete my Hajj
  • Instead of heading home, I spend a year travleing
  • I visit Mesopotamia and Persia and immerse myself in the culture
  • I then visit the east African coast by ship, going as far as Kilwa

IBN BATTUTA

  • 1330- I returned to Mecca
  • I heard the sultan of Delhi had quite the offer.
  • He was giving handsome rewards to foreign scholars.
  • I decided to sail the Arabian Sea to get to India.

THE TRAVELS OF MARCO POLO

MARCO POLO

  • 1271- I accompanied by father and uncle to China
  • There I met Khubilai Khan, the leader of the Mongols
  • He took a liking to me, which is only natural
  • I am a great conversationalist and storyteller.

MARCO POLO

  • 1271-1295- I become a part of the Mongols
  • Khubilai Khan allows me to pursue my mercantile interests
  • He also sent me on many diplomatic missions

MARCO POLO

  • 1295- We decide to return to Venice
  • After many years with the Mongols, we decide to go home
  • Khubilai Khan gives us permission to leave
  • We take a sea route back home
  • Not long after my return, I am taken to prison as a war criminal
