PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WHAT EXACTLY IS IMPETIGO?

Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection that creates red sores on the surface of the skin around one’s mouth and nose. The infection is caused by a bacterial invasion through skin breaks such as cuts, bug bites, and rashes. And can be very easily contracted from skin to skin contact, or touching/using items an infected person touched. Examples include but aren’t limited to: chap sticks, face clothes, handshakes (if they previously touched their face) and more. It is not a very serious skin infection and can be easily treated with medications.

SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

  • Red sore, pimple or blisters
  • Itching/Rashes
  • Pus
  • Skin lesions
  • Swollen lymph nodes

HOW IS THE DISEASE DIAGNOSED?

If somone thinks they have Impetigo, the first would be to check that you follow the listed symptoms and then they would have to go see a doctor. From there the doctor will observe the infected areas. Judged off observations they will figure out what is the needed route to a proper recovery. The tricky part is the caustative agents are known to be immune to some antibiotics so if after a week the sore havent seen an improvement then a culture test might need be done, based on the doctors preference. To figure out the right route of healing the infection.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS?

Impetigo is a common infection, but the treatments can be tricky. Streptococcus pyogenes and staphylococcus aureus are two types of causative agents that are immune to anitbiotics, so medicine won't always work. That is until further testing is done to figure out the best approach to the cure.

Impetigo is a BACTERIAL infection.

streptococcus pyogenes and staphylococcus aureus

Non-Bullous Impetigo

is one of the two common forms of this skin infection
Non-Bullous (usually a week long process) : Is one of the two common cases caused by both bacterias (streptococcus pyogenes and staphylococcus aureus.) What happens in this case is small solid pimple like bumps form on the surface of the skin usually around the mouth and nose (sometimes on the limbs as well), and shortly turn to fragile, thin skinned blisters. Which will rupture and ooze pus, scab over to until the break in the skin is covered by cracker colored crust. During the process lymph nodes may swell as they help fight the infection.

Bullous Impetigo

is the second of the two common forms of this skin infection
Bullous: Is the other of the two common cases, but is caused by only one of the bacteria (staphylococcus aureus.) What happens in this case is the bacteria acts as a toxin to separate the layers of skin, when the skin is separated a blister is created. Once again these are thin skinned blisters, as a result to the rupture of blisters the skin is left raw to once again form over a dark crust. These types of blisters commonly form on the torso and trunk.

HOW MANY CASES ARE SEEN YEARLY:

Approximately 3 Million. 70% of all cases are ages 2-6.

Most likely a candidate to contract Impetigo

There are nine major contributing factors to make someone a candidate.
2- 6 year olds
Regularly attends a public environment where bacteria can spread
Weakened immune systems *
Prior skin irritations due to other conditions**
Poor hygiene
Warm Weather
Having Dermatitis
Participating is skin contact activities
Having Diabetes*
*Having a weakened immune system or diabetes are more likely to develop this skin infection and possibly more serious cases of Impetigo because their body is being compromised.
**Adult cases of impetigo occurred less often than children and usually only happen when they have another type of infection first or they come in contact with an infected child. (Such as eczema or a mother holding her baby)

Based off the typical characteristics of what environments, or personal activities could cause impetigo the most likely geographical location to experience such skin infections would be poor and overcrowded countries. Places where there is consistently warmer climates. For example would be a place like Mexico, with warm climates, and densely populated cities. Africa would be another, due to poverty in the country, lack of necessities to perform proper hygiene routines, warm climate, and overcrowding in small towns and densely populated refugee camps.

RISKS

Ecythma: serious case.
Ecythma is the most serious case of impetigo, it can be caused by not properly treating the infections or have a pre-compromised immune system making it harder for your body to heal itself. The difference for ecythma is the sore are deeper in the surface of the skin, that erodes the skin causing ulcers. If this is still untreated then, yes the disease can be fatal/life threatening.
