ROWING

What is rowing?
The sport of propelling a boat by means of oars

WHO DOES IT

  • Rowing is a sport offered to boys and girls
  • They normally start in high school
  • Some go on to row in college

COLLEGE ROWING

  • Many rowers get a chance to row in college
  • Scholarships go unclaimed every year
  • The scholarships are mostly unclaimed for women

EVeNTS

  • In the fall you race a 5k
  • On average they take 20 minutes
  • In the spring you race a 2k
  • They take about 7 1/2 minutes on average

FaCTS

  • Rowing is one of the original sports in the modern Olympic Games.
  • Rowing was the first intercollegiate sport contested in the United States. The first rowing race was between Harvard and Yale in 1852.
  • Physiologists claim that rowing a 2,000-meter race – equivalent to 1.25 miles – is equal to playing back-to-back basketball games.

  • Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club
  • the girls lightweight eight was their only boat among five competing at nationals to reach the grand finals in 2014 (six fastest boats competiting for medals).
  • The girls won the Midwest championship in May on Harsha Lake at East Fork State Park to qualify for nationals.
  • They ended up taking 4th in nationals
