THE CANAL SYSTEM

HISTORY OF ARIZONAS WATER

  • The original canal system was built by The Hohokam Indians
  • When the pioneers used it because they need water to grow crops with
  • Jack Swilling created one of the first canal systems
  • It was called Swilling Irrigation Canal company
  • 1890s we ran out of water and had to built a bigger water retrenching dam
  • Today on the 14 SPR has been working and protecting the canal for 114 yrs

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CANALS

  • 1883 Arizona canal it is on the Salt River
  • Cross cut canals Cary water the the Arizona Canal to the Grand Canal
  • 924 miles of laterals one that are around the city

CULTURE

  • Lots of people ride and run on the canal to get to work and for pleasure anyone can use it
  • It is beautiful and peaceful
  • You can feed the ducks there and eat there
  • Lots of business are built around it because it is so pretty

SAFTEY

  • You are not allowed to swim there
  • You are not allowed to drive your car around unless a SRP car
  • Be in a safe distance
  • There is cat fish at the bottom to keep it clean
  • Drain it every two years

CONTROL OF THE CANALS

  • SRP manages the canal
  • Arizona Department of Water Resources manages the water for the community

ETHNIC GROUPS

  • Native Indians created the canal
  • Spaniards built on the Indians ideas
  • White pioneers created the city of Phoenix canal system

The reason why this is so important because business and the government work together to manage the canals and we live in a desert and we need water to survive water the water comes easy to us even if we are in a drought
