  • Catacombs were built in the 18th century, as the graveyards around Paris were overflowed. Bones of the citizens were exhumed and moved to the tunnels of Paris’ ancient quarry. 2) The bones of around 6 million people still remain underneath the city, packed into the tunnel walls.

  • 3) To add to the scary aura of the Catacombs, there are markings on the wall dating back to the French Revolution (1789 – 1799) 4) Only a portion of the Catacombs is open to the public, however there various secret entrances around Paris.

  • The tunnel network is around 200 miles long and it has not entirely been mapped out — when venturing away from the public areas, it is possible to get lost without an experienced guide. 6) As legend has it, in 1793 Philibert Aspairt got lost in the Paris Catacombs. His body was found 11 years later and he was reportedly close to an exit.

  • 7) ring WWII, the Resistance used portions of the Catacombs as hideouts. 8) There is also an abandoned Nazi bunker from WWII. 9) On August 23rd 2004, the Parisian police discovered The Chaillot Arena in the Catacombs – containing a fully functioning cinema projector screen, seats, reels of film, a bar, and dining area. A clandestine film festival are thought to be responsible.

  • The depth of the Paris Catacombs is 20 metres, equivalent to a five-story building.
