PROJECT OVERVIEW

  • Student-led academic assistance service for Villa Maria Academy
  • Working in coordination with NHS
  • Meant to work alongside already established academic help resources at Villa

PROJECT INSPIRATION

  • Gannon Writing Center
  • Challenges of transitioning

  • November to May
  • Approximately 30 requests
  • Open to all students, but the majority of requests were from underclassmen

TYPES OF STUDENTS

  • Students looking for help with a specific topic
  • Fundamental understanding of a subject
  • Usually are not looking for consistent meetings

  • Developing study skills
  • More regular meetings
  • Tutors become more like mentors

QUESTIONS

  • How do you usually take notes in class? Do you think there's anything you can do to make your note-taking more effective?
  • When and how do you study?
  • Do you attend your teacher's help sessions?

CHALLENGES

  • Everyone is busy
  • Staying motivated
  • Evaluation forms were not successful

SUGGESTIONS FOR NEXT YEAR

  • Create a more simple log form that the tutor and student can fill out after each meeting, which help with accountability and organization

SUGGESTIONS FOR NEXT YEAR

  • Making participation in the Peer Tutoring program obligatory for NHS members as a service requirement.

SUGGESTIONS FOR NEXT YEAR

  • The job of running the Peer Tutoring program may be split between two people on NHS as a chair position.
  • This position would be changed at the start of the second semester
