PRESENTATION OUTLINE
More than two million people lose their lives each year due to poor air quality. Researchers found that approximately 2.1 million premature deaths are the result of poor air quality which includes dust, soot, and smoke – measuring less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. Nearly half a million more perish due to human-created ozone pollution.
India is the second most deadly place for air pollution, with nearly 400,000 deaths blamed on the inhalation of particulates and over 100,000 dead each year due to ozone pollution.
Most of the current air pollution is caused by the human population. Many things can cause air pollution; burning fossil fuels, household and farming chemicals, and emissions from industries and manufacturers. The industries and manufacturing pollution could even be caused by companies from the U.S. outsourcing their plants.
Due to air pollution, much climate change takes place in South Asia. Monsoons, for example, affect the region. They cause flooding, land slides, back up in drainage systems etc.
Air pollution can also set into action the greenhouse effect. The green house effect traps heat closer to the ground, causing temperatures to increase.
Glacier melting in the Himalayas is projected to increase flooding and will affect water resources within the next two to three decades. Most likely due to the effects of air pollution.
Crop yields could decrease up to 30% in South Asia by the mid-21st century.
The flip side of the monsoons is drought. Deaths due to diarrhea primarily associated with droughts will rise in South Asia.
