MASCARA

  • Mascara is a cosmetic applied to your eyelashes to make them look longer, thicker, and darker
  • Many people use mascara(as well as makeup itself) to advance their looks

ANCIENT TIMES

  • Mascara is one if the most ancient known cosmetics
  • Has been used since as early as 4000 b.c
  • Egyptians used a substance called kohl to darken their lashes, brows, and eyelids

INGREDIENTS

  • Kohl(mascara) was usually made out of lead sulfite, malachite, and charcoal
  • Today, a common type of mascara uses oil, waxes, water, and beeswax

  • Early mascara from the modern era was usually in the form of a pressed cake
  • That was usually very messy
  • After it got more popular, the brush applicator was invented

  • There are so many different formulas for mascara
  • The u.s federal regulations prohibit the use of any pigments derived from coal or tar in any eye product
  • Therefore they use natural colors and organic pigments

  • Carbon black is in most mascara recipes and iron oxides give off brown colors
  • In colors like blue, ultramarine is used

MYTH

MASCARA IS NOT MMADE FROM BAT FECES

THE PAST

  • During Egyptian times, kohl(mascara) was used to mask the eyes and believed to scare off evil spirits

PRESENT DAY

  • Nowadays there are so many different brands of mascara from Maybelline and Great Lash, to Rimmel London
  • Everybody seems to be using mascara
