HOW DO IGNEOUS ROCKS FORM?

BY: Holli Selmon

Igneous rocks are also called fire rocks and are formed either above ground or underground.

Igneous rocks are formed when volcanoes erupt making the magma rise above Earth. When magma appears on Earth it's called lava. The rocks form when it cools above ground.

Magma is molten or almost molten rock under the Earth's surface. When the magma erupts onto the Earth's surface it's called lava. Lava is another word for magma when it erupts onto the Earth's surface.

Igneous comes from the Latin word ignis which means fire. The definition of igneous means relating to volcanic processes or igneous activity. Another definition is having solidified ((Turned into a solid)) from lava or magma.
