History:
On March 31, 1971 in Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington, the first Starbucks was open and running. Starbucks was founded by Jerry Baldwin, Gordon Bowker, and Zev Siegl. However, Kevin Johnson is now the current leader of starbucks and holds the President and Chief executive officer position, and John Culver who is the group President and chief operating officer. The three creators had first started by selling coffee beans roasted by Peet’s, which was a gourmet coffee company in California. The three of them then began to roast and sell their own. The three men were inspired to sell high-quality coffee beans and equipment. Starbucks got its name and was inspired by the classic tale of Moby Dick. The creators explained that “They really loved the look of it and it kind of tied into what they felt Starbucks stood for”. Starbucks was actually almost named “Cargo-House” which is from Moby Dick. Starbucks has evolved over the years by just the number of stores within the first few years. In 1998 there were just under two thousand stores and then JUST FOUR YEARS LATER the stores increased to Five thousand - 8 hundred. In 1994, Starbucks had created it’s first location with a drive-thru, making it easier and more convenient for their customers. Starbucks had also evolved because of their frappuccinos in 1995. 2001, Starbucks then decided to sell gift cards, which also contributed to an increase in sales. In 2008, Starbucks then created a rewards program which raised more viewers, attention and sales as well. Starbucks had numerous failures when talking about new beverages and creations. They tried to create a new drink that had coffee and soda hybrid which had failed miserably. Starbucks currently has three hundred thousand employees all over the country.

Products, Prices & Competition:

  • Hot coffee’s, hot teas, frappuccino’s, iced coffee’s & iced teas
  • Breakfast foods, pastries, snacks, protein boxes
  • Found all over the globe- U.S., China, Japan, Canada & U.K.
  • Main competitor- Dunkin’ Donuts
Starbucks has a variety of different products that they sell. They are mainly known for their coffee, however, they offer a wide variety of coffee’s that range from hot coffees, hot teas, hot beverages like hot chocolate, frappuccino’s of any flavor, iced coffees, teas and cold drinks in general. They also sell a wide variety of pastries and breakfast items that include: breakfast sandwiches, breakfast wraps, egg bites, bagels of any kind. They also offer snacks like: brownies, cookies, coffee cakes, cake pops, dream bars, muffins, scones, doughnuts, loafs, and croissants. Starbucks also offers lunch items like grilled cheese, panini’s, and protein boxes that have healthy food items in it.
Starbucks is open and running in multiple countries, but is most popular in The United States. Starbucks locations also are seen in China, Japan, Canada and the U.K.
Starbucks’ main competitor would be Dunkin’ donuts. Dunkin’ donuts sells the same type of food and drinks, which makes it a competition. However, Dunkin’ donuts tends to have lower prices than Starbucks, which is why it can be viewed as a competition.
A large drink at starbucks, depending on what you get, is typically about $5, whereas at Dunkin’, it is usually about $4. However, Starbucks has many more open stores and is usually seen everywhere. Dunkin’ donuts has a select amount of stores and is not seen as commonly.

Branding & Advertising

  • Budget friendly
  • Mainly marketed through social media platforms
  • Mailing lists
  • Spends $70 million a year on advertisements
Starbucks aims for a somewhat budget-friendly marketing strategy. Their venti drinks, or their largest drink, is about $5 depending on what beverage you purchase. Starbucks is a high marketing company. They have stores located all throughout the country. They market their business mainly through social media. Starbucks places ads on social media apps such as : Instagram & Snapchat. This can help promote their brand name and inspire many to go and try their products. Starbucks also has mailing lists where they send out emails to their customers about upcoming deals and promotions. They also send emails informing their customers on new drinks and drinks that have come back for the seasons. In my personal opinion, I would say Starbucks does a good job at promoting their company and their products. Starbucks is very well known and is popular because of their marketing and their promotions of their products.
Starbucks spends around 70 million dollars on media advertising within the United States.

Impact & Issues

  • Resource-Positive future
  • Cut their carbon, water and waste footprints by half
In 2020 Starbucks committed to a resource-positive future, formalizing environmental goals to cut its carbon, water, and waste footprints by half. As a progression against those goals, the company committed to Carbon Neutral Green Coffee and to conserve water usage in green coffee processing by 50%. Starbucks within the U.S. hires practically whoever they want. But 69% of their employees are Females. Starbucks is working to increase the prosperity and resilience of the one million farmers and workers who grow Starbucks coffee around the world. Starbucks is doing that by investing in coffee communities, sharing technical coffee knowledge, and innovating with new agricultural approaches.

Future of Starbucks

  • Evolving in a positive way
  • Expanding their locations
  • Known for their coffee as well as their atmosphere
In my personal opinion, the company of Starbucks will most likely change in a positive way. They will most likely come up with new ideas for drinks and new flavors. More holiday and seasonal drinks will most likely be created, giving their customers more options to their liking. Along with that, they’re more than likely going to expand their locations throughout the globe, possibly even going to open their business in other countries. The only problems that may occur for my business would be the pricing. Other coffee stores tend to have lower prices for their products. This could quite possibly create a dilemma for Starbucks workers. Starbucks is more than likely in a place for growth. Their coffee is a well known brand, not only for their coffee, but for their meals and atmosphere.
Starbucks has an environment where they offer their customers a welcoming and friendly atmosphere where customers may feel comfortable studying or even just catching up with an old friend.
