I ended up at the Washburn Pentecostal Church .....in 75 and 76 s because my room mate was an attender there. While a student at the University of Maine These dear brothers and sisters taught me to expect God to show up.......I got saved in a baptist church.....where the Scriptures were preached and tongues was of the devil..... and then I went to UMPI.......and the pastor at the Baptist church ran afoul of the leadership, I didn't quite know what was going on...........so I thought well I will take Wally up on his offer

...... I survey the room

Father of 8, a hard working farm hand who usually danced in the aisle, Wally explained, because God had provided that week again for his family's needs

The one legged lady who would hold the pew wwth her right hand and raise her left in worship

Granny - who every once in awhile would get a hankering to get out her glory hanky and start running around the seats and we would all get up and follow her.....

Then there was brother Poole who would preach with passion on Sunday and meet with us young firebrands with a thousand questions on Monday

These dear brothers and sisters taught me to expect God to show up.......

Mark 2:1-12

A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.

” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.

When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’?

But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”

” He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Some Background

Jesus

  • Jesus had been preaching
  • Calls some team members
  • Casts out a demon
  • Heals Peter's mother-in-law
  • Heals many more
  • Cleanses a leper
  • Probably still at Peter's house
  • Jesus is preaching.......

The Crowd

was curious  vs. 1-2
A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.

Jesus by now had a reputation in the area, and the crowd heard that Jesus was in the house and they came ..... and they came.....knowing that if Jesus is around something is going to happen, some kind of encoragement, healing or deliverance

Probably didn't know Him, but knew of his activities.....and were curious about what might happen this itme

jesus took advantage of the opportunity and was preaching to them - text says he was speaking, general word for conversation

focus was the logos - either a reference to the nature of conversation - using words, or more likely the word logos is a term used to describe the mind, heart, and will of God wrapped up in Jesus......see John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Either way, it was a message of substance......

a message with a long standing track record - "from the beginning"

a message that led to healing an deliverance of some sort Mk 1:34, 39

a message that was attractive in itself - Mk 1:33

What do you expect when you hear the Word?

4 Friends

were acting in faith vs. 3-5
Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.

Loved their paralyzed friend

Carried him to Jesus

Handled obstacles creatively

the crowd hindered their approach

the option to quit

the absence of anger or frustration when they had to find a plan B

the whatever it takes attitude, because the 4 friends knew there was no way the paralyzed friend could get himself to Jesus

the faith they had to believe Jesus could help, making all their work worth the effort

And Jesus granted the paralyzed man forgiveness of sins

demonstrating that he had that authority

implying that sinful behavior can have physical outcomes....

Risked trashing the roof
the potential mess
the potential of injuring Jesus

They carried their friend to Jesus

Scribes

were hoping nothing happens vs. 6-9
6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’?

Also asked, what are the 2 judges names in the Muppets? Statler and Waldorf share the stage left balcony box in the Muppet Theater, and the two delight in heckling every aspect of The Muppet Show.

When the Scribes saw faith in action there response was to question in their hearts?

Why is he doing that?

He is not supposed to be doing that?

Jesus answers a question with a question......vs. 8

Then he asks another question in verse 9 which is easier.....

He is claiming to be God! Blaspheming! To take on attributes of God......

When you mis judge the identity of Jesus you will end up here
every time. They needed to believe that Jesus was who he said he was........do you?

Jesus

wants us to anticipate vs. 10-11
But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”

Jesus wants us to know......

I as the Son of Man - a title that points to his humanity

Walks in the authority that the Father has given Him....

He had the power, ability to make healing happen, but you can't use your power unless you are granted the authority to do so.....Jesus has both.....

Everyone

was amazed
12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Everyone in the house was amazed, surprised

completely amazed

overwhelmed with amazement

often used to describe the reaction people had at the headscratching power of God to do the unexpected - like Mark 7:37

They were completely amazed and said again and again, “Everything he does is wonderful. He even makes the deaf to hear and gives speech to those who cannot speak.”
