PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Global warming is the gradual increase in the temperatures of the Earth's atmosphere.
Why is it a big deal?
Global warming is causing a variety of problems around the world.
Ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising, coastal areas are in danger of disappearing, people and animals are losing homes.
Pretty big deal.
Carbon dioxide and other gasses are released into the Earth's atmosphere. These trap the sun's heat, which causes global temperatures to rise.
Whenever people hear "global warming," they tend to think only about polar bears. Well, we've got some news.
Global warming affects other animals too.
ANIMALS
- Reindeer
- Penguins
- Musk oxen
- Seabirds
- Frogs
Animals that hunt and live on ice are losing their homes. Many of these animals have developed bodies that can survive in harsh winter climates. If the area is warming up, they won't survive since they haven't adapted to warmer climates. This can eventually lead to the extinction of many animals.
People are preparing for global warming. One example of this is the breeding of the naked-neck chicken. Food scientists are trying to create a food source that can survive hotter temperatures and sustain millions of people.
The naked-neck chicken is a breed of chicken that is thought to have originated from Romania. Their necks lack feathers, which helps keep cool and makes them potential food sources.
Ways you can help stall global warming
If possible, try to walk or bike instead of drive.
Recycle.
Recycling saves 10 tons of CO2 per ton of aluminum.
Switch regular lightbulbs to compact fluorescent lightbulbs.
Doing this will save about 300 pounds of CO2 per year, since CFLs use 60% less energy than normal lightbulbs.
Don't leave appliances on standby. Switch things off if you're not using them.
