  • U.s. Senator sam foley dies
  • Hubert hopper has to pick a replacment
  • His boss tries to pressure him to pick his choice
  • Big committees want a reformer

WHY SMITH?

  • Hopper's kids want smith
  • They like him bc he is head of the boy rangers
  • Can't decide who to pick so he flips a coin
  • It lands on its side next to an article about smith
  • picks smith bc he has a good image & is easy to manipulate

SENATOR PAINE

  • Takes smith under his wing
  • Was smith's father's best friend
  • He is sneaky, secretive, and phony

SMITH

  • Develops feelings for senator paine's daughter
  • Washington press says he has no business as senator
  • Paine suggests he proposes a bill to keep him busy

THE BILL

  • Comes up with a bill that would authorize a loan
  • Wants the loan to buy land for a national boy's camp
  • The land will also be payed by the boys of america
  • A lot of donations immediately come in
  • He presents the bill to the senate

  • Influences everyone's descisions
  • Making a dam right were smith wants to put the Boy's camp
  • Paine is the main person in this plan
  • Main boss

ACCUSATIONS

  • Taylor Wanted to get smith out of the senate
  • He forced senator paine to accuse him
  • Paine accused him of owning the land he wanted for the boy's camp
  • He's accused of using the boy's money for his own profit
  • He gets expelled from the senate

SAUNDERS

  • Smith's chief of staff
  • She convinces smith to delay the bill and prove his innocence

TRIAL

  • States refuse to broadcast smith's defense
  • They create lies about smith
  • The boy's club try to spread the word for smith through his newspaper
  • Senator paine tries to commit suicide but he is stopped
  • He admits to false accusations and senator smith is not expelled
