HISTORY/BACKGROUND

  • Neonatology became relevant in 1960. About 50 years ago. Their have been no historical events that have influenced neonatology.
  • Salary: $194,408-$277,801
  • Benefits: medical practice insurance, disability insurance, life insurance, vacation hours.

EVOLUTION

  • Began in the United States. In1975 was the first exam of the sub-board of neonatal- prenatal medicine. They wanted to improve the care of neonates.
  • They had to start somewhere, so they began by drawing blood, monitoring and improving the service towards newborns with disabilities and infection.
  • Adventually, they upgraded and technology improved and they can do almost anything.

DR. WILLIAM A. SILVERMAN

  • Dr. Silverman is famous for allowing premature babies to gain back their sight. This is a great factor today in Neonatology.
  • He worked hard and stayed dedicated throughout his career.
  • Other famous Neonatologist: Dr. Virginia Apgar and Dr. A. Auvard.

REQUIREMENTS

  • -Bachelors degree(4yrs) -Medical college admissions test -Medical school admissions -Medical school(4yrs) -Residency(3yrs) -Fellowship(3yrs) -Licenseing
  • Need to go to medical school.
  • Could attend Oakland University or Grand Valley State University

ROUTINE

  • To become a Neonatologist It will take about 14 years.
  • Other jobs: Pediatric Doctor, obstetrician and gynecologist, Doctor, neonatal nurse. Must start as a doctor and work your way up to what you want to specialize in.

  • Hands on

  • Nice and knows how to talk with patients and families.
  • Time management: their is times you will have to be on call and come in when ever you're needed.
  • Long hours (standing a lot)
  • A lot of room for improvements.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Daily duties: personal therapy, meetings and monitoring, care and treating for infants, education and training.
  • By having this job, I will be helping babies survive, allowing them to grow up, and have lives of their own.

  • Hours: 12 hour shifts that change daily or weekly. Night shifts and day shifts and on call hours.
  • Dress code: scrubs, scrub cap, gloves, short white coat, tie, collared shirt.
  • Neonatologist are their own boss. They're the only ones that know what they're doing in their specialty.

  • Challenges: long, crazy hours. Major responsibility. Positive perks are doing what you love and saving babies lives.
  • Job market has increasing job openings in Michigan, the U.S. And in general.
  • In the future, this job will keep having and increase in openings as well as more opportunities for helping sick infants.

  • Neonatologist work only in hospitals in the NICU.
  • This career majorly benefits the society by helping these sick babies get better and helping babies stay healthy so they can grow up and have a life of their own.
