EPILEPSY

Epilepsy: Epilepsy is a neurological disease that causes people to have recurrent seizures. Epilepsy is when neurons cannot send signals correctly.

Epilepsy affects the nervous system. Since the brain is the thing affected by Epilepsy, it take place in the Nervous System. It can also take place in the muscular system, the respiratory system, and the reproductive system.

Prognosis:
Epilepsy is common and more than 200,000 people get it every year. Over 3.4 million people have it right now in the country. Approximately 1 out of every 100 people have epilepsy.

SYMPTOMS

  • Fatigue or Fainting
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Seizures
  • Amnesia
  • Headaches
  • Sleepiness
  • Temporary paralysis

CAUSES

  • Head injury
  • Infection in the brain
  • Stroke
  • Brain tumor
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Genetic factors

DIAGNOSIS

  • Neurological Exam
  • Blood Tests
  • Electroencephalogram
  • MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Magnetoencephalography

There is no real cure for epilepsy. But, you can take therapy and medication to help with the recurrent seizures.

WHAT TO DO IF SOMEONE HAS A SEIZURE

  • Stay with them
  • Call 911 is lasts more than 3 minutes
  • Be calm
  • Comfort the person
