DESCRIPTION

  • Nuclear engineers design and operate nuclear processes and facilities, including nuclear power plants. They also conduct research on nuclear energy.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES/ PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Speak clearly so listeners can understand. Understand spoken information. Listen to others and ask questions. Understand written information.
  • Sit for long periods of time

WORK LOCATION/ WORK CONDITIONS

  • Almost always work indoors
  • Must be very exact in their work. Mistakes could cause nuclear plants to shut down or people to be injured.

  • Minnesota- $101,190 per year, $48.62 per hour.
  • U.S- $100,470 per year, $48.30 per hour.

PREPERATIONS

  • Computer Applications, Computer-Assisted Design (CAD), Computer Science, Keyboarding, Probability and Statistics
  • They recommend having an engineering internship.

SCHOOLING REQUIRED

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent; have a bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering
  • Many nuclear engineers have a master's or doctoral (PhD) degree.

LICENSING/ CERTIFICATION

  • The first step is to be certified as an engineer-in-training. The second step is to complete work experience and pass a professional engineering exam.
  • Some of the jobs also must need security clearance.
