1861

  • Texas responded to the election of Abraham Lincoln by joining the Confederacy
  • They joined a few weeks before the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter
  • 1 in 4 Texas families owned slaves
  • Many Texans men joined the war traveling east to fight with other confederate soldiers
  • Many others stayed in Texas defending coastline

1861 Continued

  • Small number joined Union Army

1862

  • War brought hardships
  • Galveston traffic halted by Union Blockade

1863

  • Confederate forces retaken Galveston for remainder of war
  • Trade with Mexico was a relief
  • Texas refugees brought slaves with them
  • Women stepped in for what men were doing

War Ends

  • War ended with General Robert E. Lee's surrender (Confederate General)
  • General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston and freed all slaves in Texas
  • Texas family's who had slaves pledged to not have slaves

Reconstruction

  • It was not easy to ban Slavery
  • Slaves had a terrible time building new lives but at least they were not slaves
  • Violence after war was common

End End War War

  • Native Americans were pushed out of Texas
  • Discussion between democrats and republican ended reconstruction

Civil War

  • This is the Civil war and Reconstruction time period
  • This war helped for WW1 because it prepared them
