CULTURE

The culture in Ancient Rome was quite diverse as they allowed conquered people to live freely and even become citizens. Aqueducts brought water into the city and Wine and oil were imported from other lands. The alphabet and calendar we use today was also used by the Romans. it has been estimated that a quarter of the Roman population were slaves. The romans spoke Latin and their language has influenced the Romance languages, or, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian. The city of Rome was built on seven hills and is located on the Tiber River in the central area of the Italian peninsula. The Majority of the population lived in the center of the city in apartment blocks. Children were typically educated at home by house slaves Before 200 BC. Around 200 BC Roman boys and girls went to school once they were 6 or 7 years old for 6 to 7 years where they learned reading, writing, and counting. People worshipped many different gods and had different beliefs as Rome was home to many different peoples.

Built in 500 BC, basilicas used as law courts and temples surrounded the forum. over time, there were three arches built, the arch of Augustus, the Arch Of Titus, and the arch of Severus. The first arch, arch of Augustus, was built in 29 BC. The second, the Arch Of Titus was constructed in 81 AD. Finally, the arch of Severus, was built in 203 AD. The Temple Of Saturn, the Curia or senate house, and more are located here. Most important religious, political, and social events took place in the forum. The first laws were written on 12 bronze tablets and displayed in the forum. Most buildings were destroyed in 410 AD when the empire began to fall. It became a grazing pasture for animals until it was found in 1803 when it was excavated over the course of 100 years. The forum was reconstructed multiple times throughout its

The colosseum was a gift to the romans from the Flavian dynasty. Originally known as the Flavian amphitheater, It was built by vespas and opened by his son Titus. People who were sentenced to death would be fed to the animals. The colosseum featured 80 arches displayed throughout its 3 stories. The colosseum could seat around 50,000 people and the arena was as large as a soccer field. It measured 620 ft long and 513 ft wide, and held the title of largest amphitheater in the Roman world. The colosseum was dug into hillsides to provide adequate support, and was made out of stone and concrete. The colosseum had three stories with each one having a different column on each level, starting with Doric, the Ionic, and on the top Corinthian. The colosseum was used for 400 years and then was used for building materials until the 1700’s. 2/3s of the colosseum was destroyed, but it is still a popular tourist attraction.
