THE HUANG HO VALLEY

THE BEGINING

• Most chose the valley because it was fertile
• It was cut off from other civilizations
• They made clay ovens, cupboards, benches and pottery

CITIES OF THE SHANG

• Dynasty= ruling family also called Shang
• The Shang came to power in 1766 bc
• Most didn't live in the city
• The Chinese produced silk hundreds of years before anyone else

SPIRITS, ANCESTORS, AND KINGS

• They worshiped spirits=supernatural beings
• They believed that ancestors=those from which one descends, influenced people's fortunes

3. They believed their kings received their powers from the spirits of nature and their wisdom from their ancestors

• The kings got advice from ancestors they did this using oracle bones
• The writing on oracle bones is the oldest know form of Chinese writing
• Under the king was nobles=people of high rank in a kingdoms

DECLINE OF THE SHANG

• They spent much of their time hunting
• They fought about land
• They are very skilled

DECLINE OF SHANG

• There were two classes in Shang rich- lived in city had nice things and poor- lived in country didn't have very nice things
• This might have wreaked the civilization
• They left behind what some say to be the finest works of bronze ever made

• Children were taught to honor older people
• Wives were trained to obey their husbands
