Hernan Cortez

  • Was a Spanish conquistador and explorer
  • Defeated the Aztec empire
  • Claimed Mexico for Spain

Pineda

  • Was the first to be documented in Texas history
  • After his long adventure, Pineda spent forty days repairing his ships
  • Pineda was killed in a battle with the native Huastec people at the Panuco River, lukily his map made it back to Governor Garay.

Cabeza de Vaca

  • One of four survivors of the 1527 Narvaez expedition
  • He lived among the Native Americans for eight years
  • He became a trader and a faith healer while on his travels
  • He was transported to Spain for trial in 1545

Francisco Coronado

  • His expedition marked the first European sitings of the Grand Canyon
  • He was known as "Vasquez de Coronado"
  • He was the Governor of New Galicia

Hernando de Alvarado

  • 1540 Alvarado became captain of artillery for the Coronado expedition
  • during the storming of Hawiku pueblo he saved the life of his commander
  • while searching for buffalo, his command become the first Europeans to visit High Plains

Juan De Onate

  • Explorer and governor of New Mexico
  • He led Spanish expeditions to the Great Plains and Lower Colorado River Vally
  • There are two schools named after him

La Salle

  • explored great lakes some are the golf of mexico and the Mississippi river
  • he claimed the entire Mississippi river basin for france
  • he was murdered by an unknown person
