PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Learning theories are conceptual frameworks. They describe how information is absorbed, processed, and retained during learning.
3 basic types of learning theory
- Behaviourism
- Cognitive Constructivism
- Social Consturctivism
Behaviourist Model
- Involves passive absorption of knowledge by the learner and this is seen to be promoted by repetition and positive reinforcement.
- Learner believed to start off as a 'clean slate' & learning is defined as a change in the behaviour
- Stimulus = response Eg. Pavlovs dogs
Behaviourist teaching methods are proven to be most successful when there is a 'correct' response or easily memorised material
Relies on transmission of information and positive reinforcement BUT
what issues do you forsee?
Cognitive Constructivism
- Knowledge is actively constructed by learners based on pre-existing cognitive structures
- The teacher facilitates learning by providing an environment that promotes discovery and assimilation/accommodation
Cognitive teaching methods aim to assist students in assimilating new information to existing knowledge
They place greater significance on strategies that help students accomodate new material. Eg Explain new material in their own words, provide questions to structure their reading in order to monitor their own learning.
Social Constructivism
- Knowledge is constructed within social contexts through interactions with a knowledge community.
- Collaborative learning is facilitated and guided by the teacher. Group work.
Social learning theory contd
- People learn from each other via observation, imitation and modelling
- Learning becomes a partnership (Ako)
- Learning is not just something that happens in our heads
