African Americans had joined white churches, but there numbers had grew and the Americans left and made there own church

THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH

  • Began in the south
  • In 1750
  • Due to communities growing from South to North

AFTER THE CIVIL WAR

  • African American missionaries traveled to the South to open new churches.

NATIONAL BAPTIST CONVENTION

  • Created in 1894
  • The largest African American religious organization in the country

COLORED METHODIST CHURCHES

  • They sorted a colored Methodist church, known today as the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

  • The church taught others literature, and helped open shops, built schools
  • Literacy among Southern African Americans increased 60% by the 1900s!
