LINUS YALE JR.

EARLY LIFE

  • Born in Salisbury, NY April 4, 1821
  • Enjoyed painting very much
  • Had A Welsh decent

INSPIRATION

  • Father owned a lock shop in Newport, NY
  • Despite love for painting, took up the trade as well
  • Together he and his father created "infallible" lock
  • His dad would later pass away in 1858

YALE'S LOCKS

  • Based his ideas on ancient Egyptian wooden locks
  • He became master at picking locks
  • This gave him the knowledge to create the "infallible" lock
  • Decided to branch off of bank locks into into everyday locks

THE LOCK

PATENT

  • He patented the idea of "cylinder locks"
  • These would be used for everyday items
  • The design has stayed the same since its original conception

NEW PARTNERSHIP

  • Partnered up with wealthy man named Henry Towne
  • With this funding created Yale Lock Manufacturing Company
  • This company was based in Samford, Connecticut
  • After Yales death company was later renamed to include Towne
  • (Yale & Towne Manufacturing Company)
