So what happens when they combine?

When acids combine with bases, a chemical reaction does occur, resulting in products very much different from the original reactant.

How to tell if it's an acid or base?
pH scale:
Scale used to express the acidity or basicity of a substance.

pH scales are usually litmus paper but electric pH readers do exist.

How to use the scale:
*Acids range from 0-6, 0 is highly acidic and 6 is a weak acid.
*Bases range from 8-14, 14 is very strong and 8 is weak.

7 is neutral; meaning it is neither an acid or base

Examples of bases:
Soap
Coffee
Nicotine
Degenerate
Baking soda

Examples of acids:
Egg whites
Vinegar
Most fruits
Urine
Wine
Yogurt

Examples of Neutrals
Water
Blood (7.2)
Milk (6.5)
