  • Background- born in Paris, France. Went to school in Paris also.
  • Something interesting is that he attended law school.
  • He was alive during the Franco-Prussian War
  • Influences- war and the ballet
  • Media he works in- paint, photography, sculpture, pastels

  • Style- contemporary and an impressionist
  • An impressionist makes work that appears to not be fully completed
  • Subjects/themes- horses, ballerinas, cafe life
  • Sonething interesting about his work is that it often appears unfinished

  • Made between 1880-1882
  • Materials- pastels on paper
  • Size- 48.2 cm by 61 cm
  • It is currently on display in the J. Paul Getty Museum in LA

PERCIEVING THE ART

  • We noticed an exhausted ballerina accomponied by a chaperone
  • We recognized the ballet shoes and outfit, which shows her profession
  • It causes us to feel stress, because the ballerina seems anxious or tired
  • The pastel drawing reminds us of the hard work snd dedication of an athlete
  • A ballerina is preparing to go onstage, and is nervous. She is with a chaperone

PERCIVING THE ART

  • It could also be after a performance, where she stumbled
  • It makes us wonder what the purpose of the chaperone is
  • We want to know where this takes place, or what inspired Degas to create it
