THESE LITERARY SEAMS SUGGEST: JOHN2:11,2:23,4:54

  • The author of John received his information from two different sources.
  • This is shown in a couple of ways. In 2:11 it says Jesus performs first sign..
  • In 2:23 many people started believing in Jesus through the many signs he did.
  • 4:54 states how Jesus performed his second sign.
  • Jesus is in Cana, then Jerusalem and back to Galilee, resulting in 2 sources.

THESE LITERARY SEAMS SUGGEST: JOHN 5:1-6:1

  • Source of information could be from a person not familiar with area.
  • This is shown in 5:1 when Jesus went to Jerusalem to teach and heal.
  • He spends most of his time there until chapter 6. Chapter 6 states:
  • Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. This is impossible
  • Jesus was no where near the sea.

LITERARY SEAMS SUGGEST: JOHN 14:30-31; 15:1-18:1

  • The author of John did not have all the information needed for the gospel
  • This is shown by the end of ch 14. Jesus says "rise let us be on our way."
  • After he says this he does not leave and continues talking for 3 chapters.
  • Once ch 18 comes Jesus and his disciples leave.
  • Why would Jesus say he is leaving but does not leave right away?
