After World War II (1941-45), Joseph W. Mountin, a physician and public health leader, formed a plan to convert the Malaria Control in War Areas office and control infectious diseases. It was founded July 1, 1946 as the successor to the World War II Malaria control in war areas program. Its primary mission to prevent malaria from spreading across the nation.
