WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH

HISTORY

• founded in 1955 in Topeka, Kansas
• Began protesting in 1991 at a park, populated mostly by gays
• Gained notoriety after protesting at the funeral of Matthew Shepard
• They are also well known for protesting at the funerals of fallen soldiers
• 39 members, protest around the US, banned in Canada and UK

The church preaches against Gays, Other religions (Jews, Catholics, Muslims), politicians, and the media. They preach against all forms of sin. They don't believe god loves all. They believe that Jesus only died for certain people. They thank god for everything including 9/11, dead soldiers, hurricane Katrina, etc.

LEADERSHIP

• Fred phelps founded WBC in 1955
• After his death in 2014, his daughter Shirley phelps- roper took over.

SALVATION

• They believe you must thank god for everything end Jesus died for their sins only. They believe everyone but themselves will perish
• ex. Celebrities
• Ps. Obama is the antichrist

RESPONSE

• They are hated by all ex. KKK, Hell's angels
• Christianity (baptist) completely separated themselves from them.
• Counter protest is common

• Offensive signs (god hates fags, thank god for 9/11, thank god for aids. Pray for more dead soldiers, fags doom nations, fag troops, etc.)
• They hold the US flag upside down
• They are a hate group
