HISTORY OF FOOTBALL

  • Walter Camp is considered to be the father of American football
  • Football is a mixture of rugby and soccer.
  • Began playing in late 19th century
  • First professional game was in 1892

HISTORY CONTINUED

  • First game played in November 6, 1869 between Princeton and Rutgers
  • College football came before professional
  • First prestigious professional league was American Professional Football Conference
  • National Football League founded in 1920 (NFL)

RULES AND REGULATIONS

  • Field is 100 yards with 10 yard end-zones
  • 52.5 yards wide
  • Field goals 10 feet off the ground and 18.5 feet wide
  • Field is broken up into two 50 yard sides

RULES AND REGULATIONS

  • 11 players on for each team at a time
  • 4 downs to get a first down again
  • 10 yards for a first down
  • 4 15 minute quarters (NFL)
  • Halftime in between 2nd and 3rd quarter

ON-FIELD

  • Postions- offense
  • 1. Quarterback- play runs through him he initiates plays
  • 2. Running back- main focus recieve handoffs from qb and gain yards
  • 3. Wide receivers- catch passes from qb to gain yards
  • 4. Lineman- big men that block for the skill positions so they can gain yards

ON-FIELD

  • Positions- defense
  • 1. Linebackers- play the middle of the field main job to tackle running back
  • 2. Defensive back- includes cornerbacks and safety's, job to protect against pass
  • 3. Defensive ends- job to rush the qb and play outside run
  • 4. D-line- big men that stuff up the middle

ON-FIELD

  • Two basic types of plays- runs and passes
  • Runs- qb hands ball off to rb and he goes through the lines holes
  • Pass- qb throws the ball to wr to gain more yardage
  • Gameplay- teams obj is to gain yards and score points

ETC

  • 6 points for a touchdown 1 for extra point kick
  • 2 points for a safety and 2 points for a 2 point conversion after a TD
  • 3 points for a field goal
  • 4 referees on the field- 2 line judges 1 back judge 1 referee
