SIMILE

  • A comparison of two things using "like" or "as".
  • Example: I am as busy as a bee today.

METAPHOR

  • A direct comparison of two things.
  • Example: The snow is a white blanket.

PERSONIFICATION

  • A type of figurative language in which a nonhuman subject is given human characteristics.
  • Example: The stars danced playfully in the sky.

HYPERBOLE

  • Extreme exaggeration used to make a point
  • Example: I've told you a million times not to do that!

ALLITERATION

  • The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of closely connected words.
  • Example: big brown bear or Dan's dog dove deep into the dam.

ONOMATOPOEIA

  • The use of words that sound like what they mean.
  • Examples: "hiss", "buzz", "pow!", "boom!"

IDIOM

  • An idiom is a word or phrase that is not taken literally
  • Example: "Don't add fuel to the fire" or "That's a piece of cake!"

MOOD

  • Feelings a reader gets when they read a book.
  • Examples: frustrated, gloomy, sorrow, excited
