INVOKE

  • To call on for assistance, inspiration, or support
  • The sound of the choir singing invoked strong feelings in the audience

  • The difference between what is expected to happen and the actual outcome
  • When it turned out the villain was trying to save the hero, I found it ironic

MONOLOGUE

  • A long speech preformed by a single character or actor
  • The monologue seemed to drone on to the crowd

SOLILOQUY

  • The act of speaking while alone on stage to allow a characters*
  • *Thoughts and ideas to be conveyed to the audience
  • Hamlets soliloquy is now widely remembered

ASIDE

  • A remark made by an actor to the audience
  • Not heard by other actors
  • The actor took a moment to speak aside to the audience

DRAMATIC IRONY

  • The words and actions are known to the audience but not characters
  • We knew he would double cross, while the characters brother didn't

COMIC RELIEF

  • A break from tension in a drama provided by a characters numerous action
  • Or words
  • The character broke the moment of tension with a quick joke for comic relief

SATIRE

  • The use of wit, exaggeration, sarcasm,or ridicule to expose *
  • *and criticize faults in order to promote change
  • Political cartoons often give satire to serious topics

SARCASM

  • Remarks that mean the opposite of what they seem to say
  • Mocking
  • "Oh I'm sorry." He said, sarcasm seeping through his voice
