EAST ASIA

By: Erin Dempsey

Following a period of civil disorder, a period of political unification in Japan occured. Traditional values were promoted, and political and social stability was attempted. At the end of the civil war caused by turmoil from the shogun (military governor) and feudal vassals, there were many powerful states in Japan.

There were several people who helped with the unification of Japan, however the last and one of the most remembered was Tokugawa Ieyasu. He created a military government called the Tokugawa Bakufu which was supposed to act as a temporary replacement for the previous government.

The goal of the Tokugawa shoguns was to prevent another civil war from breaking out until the country could become more stable. During this period, Tokugawa Ieyasu and his fellow shoguns worked to isolate Japan from the rest of the world but cutting off relations and trade for the purpose of returning back to Japan's original traditional state.
